Job Description:

The Corrosion and Materials Engineer is the site lead technical expert in PE (Pressure Equipment) corrosion and materials issues and work effectively in a team environment to uphold overall PEI (Pressure Equipment Integrity) and reliability. He/she provides technical support in PE corrosion and materials issues and work effectively in a team environment with PEI Engineers, PEI Corrosion & Materials Engineers, PEI Inspectors, and other refinery support staff in Process Engineering, Operations, Maintenance, Turnaround and Major Projects.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide proactive and reactive technical support on issues related to corrosion mechanisms, corrosion control, and metallurgy for MOC’s, PHA studies, plant changes, and new projects.
  • Provide material selection and technical support to assist process engineers, operations specialists, and PEI Inspectors in day-to-day activities related to metallurgy, welding, and corrosion control.
  • Site focal point for non-metallic and coating selection and application.
  • Accountable for corrosion and materials engineering upkeep of unit Corrosion Control Documents (CCD’s), CCD training, and inputs for site Risk Based Inspection (RBI) process. Working with PEI inspectors and engineers, develop and integrate CCD recommendations into piping and equipment inspection strategies.
  • Regular monitoring of identified IOWs (Integrity Operating Windows) within the process units that may affect degradation of PE. Make recommendations based on deviations from IOW limits. Update any IOWs using the site MOC process including Ensure Safe Production (ESP) work process (if applicable).
  • Coordinate corrosion monitoring, data gathering and their subsequent use for inspection planning. Provide technical input to chemical inhibitor programs, boiler feed water, and cooling water treatment programs, and other chemical treatment programs.
  • Deliver Corrosion Reviews and RBI revalidations when performed for inspection interval setting and inspection planning.
  • Lead root cause analysis/investigations. Coordinate failure analysis activities, and recommend mitigation methods for corrosion and materials issues, including repair strategies and replacement decisions.
  • Coordinate development of data sheets for dissimilar metal welds and injection/mix points. Identify equipment in environmental cracking service and assist PEI inspectors in establishing inspection intervals for these.
  • Develop and implementing welding/PWHT procedures and troubleshoot welding problems when they occur.
  • Ability to call on network of other Corrosion & Materials Engineers or professional organizations to learn from, share location experiences.
  • Review and improvement of corporate and Martinez Refinery PEI procedures.

Job Requirements:

Qualification & Experience:

  • Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
  • Bachelor’s Degree with emphasis in Corrosion Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Welding Engineering, or Materials Science.
  • With at least ten (10) years related experience in the field of metallurgy and/or corrosion control and mitigation.
  • Background in refinery or petrochemical plant processes, damage mechanisms, and material properties.
  • Skill level of working with industry design standards and PEI – Corrosion & Materials Best Practices.
  • Candidate must possess excellent communication, analytical, and problem solving skills and have the ability to influence and create alternative thinking.
  • Ability to lead sub-teams from varied disciplines to work together and deliver objectives. e.g. failure analysis.
  • Self-starter who can set own goals and direction with minimal supervision.
