Job Description:

A key member of the Retail FP&A team with primary responsibility for the monitoring, control, planning, budgeting, forecasting and reporting of capital budgets across the Sainsbury’s Group. This role provides Capital financial control and analysis as we seek to deliver our Group Investment strategy and involves liaison with Finance representatives across the whole of the Sainsbury’s Group to manage our total capital investment program to plan. In addition, the role maintains responsibility over benefits realisation, providing reporting and insight to the Capital Returns Forum (CRF) and additional forums.


Job Responsibilities:

  • Produce timely and accurate capital reporting to the Business Performance Review (BPR) and key stakeholders as required, including management accounting, forecasting and benefits realisation
  • Develop strong relationships with divisional finance representatives and establish two way communication in order to effectively and proactively manage the capital performance, latest view and benefit realisation
  • Manage the consolidation activity of the capital budget, forecasts and corporate plan, working cross functionally with all divisional finance teams to understand and challenge, including risks & opportunities
  • Support with the co-ordination of agendas, papers, minutes and actions for both the BPR Investment review and the Capital Returns Forum (CRF)
  • Manage the Group capital benefits realisation process, driving accountability and insight to deliver our return on investment (ROI) objectives. This includes monitoring the tracking of key capital projects versus their original signoff and embedding the P&L implications with FP&A, CRST and business partnering teams
  • Support the Finance Transformation team to deliver the Future Finance Programme and drive change, in particular the Planning, Budgeting and Forecasting (PBF) tool
  • Ensure that a robust financial control environment exists and strong governance is adhered to in respect of capital approval and benefit realisation
  • Provide Group wide training and advisory support to divisional finance business partners on capital accounting, forecasting and reporting, creating an ambitious performance culture to drive results and evaluate risks and opportunities
  • Manage Half Year and Year End accounting deliverables, including liaison with internal and external audit teams as required
  • Ad hoc analysis supporting the Head of Retail FP&A, Commercial Finance Director and CFO
  • Deputising for the Senior Finance Manager where applicable, providing support to the wider Commercial Finance Leadership teams
  • Lead, develop and motivate members of the team to high performance through great coaching and communication, review of work, suggesting areas for improvement and sharing expertise

Job Requirements:

  • Post-qualification experience in financial planning/partnering role (Retail industry a distinct advantage)
  • Effective communicator, influencer and challenger with senior stakeholders, both orally and written
  • Strong networking and business partnering skills
  • Self-motivated team player, able to work autonomously with excellent planning and organisation skills
  • Proven history of effective prioritisation and ability to push back and manage any associated conflicts when appropriate
  • Strong commercial acumen with a focus on driving excellent financial and commercial performance
  • Comfortable working with ambiguity and ability to present complex information in a simplified manner
  • High levels of drive and resilience
  • Must have a strong eye for detail and a passion for accuracy, with the ability to work at pace under pressure and tight deadlines
  • Strategic perspective – understanding of the wider issues impacting corporate performance
  • Advanced PowerPoint and Excel modelling skills, with the aptitude for turning data into analysis and insight to focus on the key issues
