Job Description:

The South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) is seeking to appoint a half-time Project Coordinator in its Health Systems Research Unit (HSRU). The purpose of this job is to assist and work with the Project Manager to manage the Schools Championing Safe South Africa Study, which is a study to evaluate an intervention engaging teachers and students in adolescent prevention of HIV risk and intimate partner violence. The study takes place in three high schools in Cape Town and the incumbent needs to be based in Cape Town. The position is initially half-time but may be increased to full-time should funding become available. There is the potential to renew the contract after one year.


Job Responsibilities:

To assist the Project Leader to coordinate and manage the logistics of the study implementation including to:

  • Coordinate and implement the Schools Championing Safe South Africa study:
  • Implement project management processes to facilitate data collection
  • Set up working relationships with school communities
  • Assist the project manager with the finalization of the data collection manual
  • Assist in training fieldworkers and do ongoing training during the data collection phase
  • Assist in the logistical arrangements for data collection
  • Assist in supervising fieldworkers’ performance
  • Conduct interviews with students and other school community members
  • Set up, manage, and monitor quality control and quality assurance processes
  • Ensure data is collected, organized and stored according to SAMRC ethical principles
  • Assist with management and problem solving of the electronic data collection tools and processes.
  • Assist the team with the analysis of the data
  • Produce reports on study progress for project manager and team
  • Assist with writing up the research outputs

Job Requirements:

  • Four Year Degree in Public Health or Social Sciences or related field
  • Two years of relevant research experience in research study co-ordination
  • Supervision experience
  • Experience conducting face to face quantitative interview
  • Research data collection coordination skills
  • How to conduct face to face interviews
  • Have training skills
  • Demonstrated experience in managing people and conflict resolution
  • Self-motivated and the ability to work independently; manage multiple tasks and a small team effectively
  • Fluency in speaking and writing in English and an isiXhosa
