 Job Description:

The Analyzer Engineer, a member of the Engineering Services department at the ExxonMobil Baytown Facility, plays an important role in the safe and profitable operation of our Baytown area refinery and chemical plants. Our online analyzers provide automated, real-time analytical measurements of our processes in order to ensure environmental compliance and safe operations, and to maximize profitability through real-time control and optimization of our processes. The Analyzer Engineer is a subject matter expert in these online analyzers, and is a critical part of the engineering team at Baytown. They will interface with a diverse team of talented personnel, ranging from Business Teams, maintenance teams, technical teams who leverage our analytical data (safety, process, and process control engineers), and project teams. The Analyzer Engineer will design and test new on-line analytical equipment prior to installation to ensure the designs are safe, cost effective, sustainable, and meet the measurement and business needs. They will work with our technicians to assist in troubleshooting of systems when problems do arise. They will also interface with external vendors and contractors as required. The Analyzer Engineer is the steward of our online analyzer equipment, and will leverage data to drive long-term improvements in analyzer performance, reliability, and cost. They will collaborate with our centralized Research and Engineering organization and with other engineers at our global facilities to drive improvements and pilot new analytics technology. They will have the opportunity to learn about adjacent technical disciplines, including safe system design, basic fluid mechanics, process chemistry, online control systems, and project management.

Job Responsibilities:

• Own the performance of our online analytical systems and drive long-term improvements in performance, maintainability, and reliability
• Support project development and execution of analyzer systems, including providing design specifications and cost estimation, reviewing process analyzer systems and their required infrastructure, and following execution through construction and online commissioning
• Collaborate as part of a diverse and dynamic team of chemists, engineers, and technicians, both locally in Baytown and across ExxonMobil’s global organization
• Participate in safety and environmental programs that keep employees and business partners safe and protect the environment
• Assist technicians in troubleshooting failed or problematic analyzer systems and determining root cause
• Design and support analyzer systems to safely extract a hydrocarbon sample from a pipe, condition the material, and analyze the material without human intervention

Job Requirements:

• MS in Chemistry or BS in Chemical Engineering with a minimum of 2 years of experience in a laboratory or analyzer engineering position, or
• Equivalent work experience
• Ability to work well in a diverse and dynamic matrixed organization
• PhD in Analytical, Physical, or Organic Chemistry, or
• Must be willing to relocate to the Houston surrounding area
• Electrochemistry
• High level knowledge of general digital, computing, and software concepts
• Mass Spectrometry
• Molecular spectroscopy (IR, UV/Vis, NMR)
• Chromatography (liquid or gas)
• Track record of attention to detail, self-starter mentality, and follow-through on goals and deliverables
• Ability to communicate complex technical topics clearly to a range of audiences, ranging from operations and maintenance teams, technical and engineering teams, and senior business leaders
