We are seeking a professional like you to join our team and promote the health and safety of BASF Wyandotte employees through implementation of the health surveillance program, meeting regulatory requirements, rendering nursing care to the ill and injured, and directing emergency medical response.

In this role you will assist all levels of site management in the control of lost time by evaluating employees returning to work after absences, injuries, illnesses, and surgeries with the assistance of the site physician, as well as reduce medical absenteeism by facilitating early return to work from STD and LTD.

The occupational health nurse supervisor is a representative to employees, their managers, and the local medical community, and will report to the Director, Environmental Health and Safety and be functionally responsible to the Associate Corporate Medical Director.

Job Requirements:

  • Qualifications – BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent
  • Leveraging your Registered Nurse Certification and your current Michigan Nursing License, you will supervise BASF employed and contract Nursing staff at the BASF Wyandotte Site, as well as direct the activities of contract physicians, within the scope of practice defined by the State of Michigan and the BASF Corporate Medical Department.
  • Combining your working knowledge of current treatments, therapy and medications, and your knowledge of occupational health emergency first aid practices and initial occupational injury treatment, you will be responsible making nursing diagnoses, performing specialized testing and evaluation of results, and assessing patients presenting symptoms of injury or illness in the Medical Department, as well as in plant emergency situations.
  • Demonstrating your experience in an occupational health setting working with in work related injuries and illnesses, governmental regulations, patient education and medical surveillance, you will dispense medications and immunizations and administers treatments as directed by site physician. You will also provide direct care, including treatment of work-related injuries or illnesses using approved protocols, and ensure that nursing orders and protocols are reviewed with the site physician annually.
  • Your experience in a non-occupational nurse setting will be essential, as you are responsible for medical triage, as well as independently judging severity, disposition, and referral.  You will also alternate call availability with the other BASF-employed nurse.  When on-call you must be available 24 hours a day, 7 days per week to take first call for injuries or illnesses from first aiders and to consult about other work-related health issues as needed, and coordinate arrangements for transportation of employees to local medical facilities for evaluation and treatment.
  • Your supervisory experience in a non-occupational nurse setting will be a valued asset, as you coach performance by explanation of technically complex facts in various areas of occupational nursing practice. You will also actively train new BASF nursing staff on-site, as well as review scheduling of exams and performance of precision testing by staff and the nursing interface with the activities and training of the emergency medical response team and site medical case management.
  • Utilizing your working knowledge of applicable OSHA regulations, you will be responsible for compliance with medical aspects of OSHA and BASF Corporate standards, as well as  administer medical surveillance programs according to BASF Corporate Implementation Requirements.
  • Your continuing education courses in nursing and occupational health medical surveillance will be essential, as you collaborate with industrial hygiene, safety and management regarding perceived health problems related to workplace exposure and promotes the observance of good hygiene and safety practice in the performance of employees’ job duties.
  • Relying upon your experience in Occupational Health Nursing, n, you will schedule exams and participate in pre-placement and other periodic examinations, as well as perform precision testing such as spirometry, audiometry, and breath alcohol, and communicate results.
  • Applying your robust knowledge of Michigan Worker’s Compensation Laws, you will reduce lost time for work-related illnesses or injuries by case management facilitating earliest return to work for workers’ compensation cases, by submitting the requisite Workers Compensation claims information to the Corporation’s insurance carrier.  You will also respond to BASF’s Workers Compensation carrier’s requests for information and work closely with site HR, supervisor, Safety, Insurance, Workers’ Compensation carrier, and Legal.
  • Displaying your exceptional interpersonal and human relations skills, you will represent BASF in community and other outside activities, as well as develop relationships with local practitioners, and coordinate and manage health awareness programs. You will also direct the activities and training of the emergency medical response team, arranging for certified instruction as required by state and federal regulations and BASF needs, and implement the Hepatitis B Vaccine program for emergency medical response team.
  • Applying your excellent computer skills, you will ensure maintenance and upkeep of the site’s medical department and inventory control of medications and supplies, maintains current and accurate medical records for each employee, while maintaining medical confidentiality. You will also review current and accurate medical records processing, including protocol compliance and temporary restrictions.
