Job Responsibilities:

Coordinates interpreters for requested sessions/classes/meetings/disciplinary hearings, and online learning sessions/media. This includes Afrikaans/English/Sesotho speaking interpreters, as well as South African Sign Language (SASL) interpreters for Deaf students/clients/UFS employees. Oversees the planning, training, payment, disciplinary measures and performance of interpreters.

  • Coordinate spoken and South African Sign Language (SASL) interpreters for meetings/classes/sessions.
  • Management of the interpreters.
  • Ensures that interpreters deliver a quality service.
  • Oversees the payment of interpreters.
  • Headhunt potential interpreters for future endeavours.
  • Management of interpreting equipment.
  • Oversees training/testing/evaluation of interpreters.
  • Reports to line manager on finances and planning.
  • Conducts quality control
  • Upkeep of interpreting equipment/services.
  • Draw up of reports and statistics.
  • Addresses problems regarding the delivery of interpreting services.
  • Addresses interpreters on their behaviour, preparedness, work ethic if necessary.
  • Technical assistance with online classes / resources / meetings for both interpreters and lecturers.
  • Preparation and conversion of online classes / resources to more accessible mediums for students with hearing impairments (SASL video/subtitling/captioning/transcription).
  • Training of interpreters for online interpreting.
  • Assists with individual interpreter development.
  • Liaise with lecturers/other UFS staff/community members/interpreters and CUADS employees.
  • Manage concerns/requests of students/lecturers/clients.
  • Liaise with various language departments of the UFS.
  • Advise external clients/community members.
  • Advise lecturers on technical aspects of their online classes which might be challenging for students with hearing impairments.

Job Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree or a B.Tech degree on NQF level 7 in Language Practice.
  • A minimum of two (2) years’ relevant working experience related to the duties and responsibilities.

    • Knowledge of the Deaf community and the challenges Deaf students face in tertiary education (face-to-face classes and online classes).
