Job Description:

The Development Officers (DO) generate philanthropic income for Sutter Hospitals Foundation. They are assigned major areas of fund development, such as planned giving, foundation grants, corporate solicitation, annual giving, special events, and special prospects. Specific assignments are delegated by the Executive Director through policy direction of the Foundation Board of Trustees. A high degree of personal initiative is encouraged and expected.

DO will actively team with other development staff including Senior Development Officers, Executive Director (ED), SHSSR Vice President for philanthropy and the entire philanthropy team. DO will be primarily responsible for specific hospital service lines as well as other high priority projects. DO will generate and follow-through with complex solicitation plans: develop a case for support; identify and recruiting a compelling solicitation team of physicians, volunteers and senior executives — in collaboration with ED and development staff. Teamwork and collaboration within SMCF as well as with other Sutter Health foundations is required. DO will also coordinate, organize and manage donor clubs (Lead), giving clubs (secondary), Annual Fund (Lead), First-time patients, Grateful patients, employee campaign (Lead), and manage cultivation events (Lead).

Job Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in health, communication or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and directly related work experience is required.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of fund development, including sources of grants and funds at the gift level of $1000 or greater.
  • Knowledge of local community leaders/organizations, philanthropists and media representatives is strongly desired.
  • Knowledge of the healthcare industry in general and Sutter Community Hospitals in particular is extremely helpful.
  • Two years professional experience in related field. A track record of results showing funds raised of $500,000 annually.
  • Must be able to work with physicians and staff from many departments.
  • Must possess strong motivational and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence others.
  • Must be able to work under multiple and frequent deadlines.
  • Must have the highest level of personal ethics.
  • Requires attention to detail as well as organization and prioritization skills.
  • Must work well as a team member and leader, and have the ability to work independently with minimal direction or supervision.
  • Computer skills are required.
  • Public speaking skills are required.
  • Must have effective project planning/management skills.
